Australia-based diamond miner Rio Tinto announced that its 2016 rough diamond production at its Argyle Diamond Mine reached 13.958 million carats, up 4 percent from 2015.
Production at its Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada likewise registered a 4 percent increase at 3.995 million carats from 2015.
Rio Tinto attributed the strong performance at Argyle to a ramp-up of the underground mine, adding that higher-ore throughput was partially offset by a lower recovered grade. “Likewise at Diavik, carats recovered in 2016 were higher due to higher-ore throughput offsetting lower grades,” the miner noted.
It also set its diamond production guidance for 2017 to 19 million to 24 million carats, from 18 million to 20 million carats in 2016.
