Though it is the second in the series this was my first Rumpole I was charmed and I fully enjoyed it Rumpole is an aging cantankerous barrister He specializes in defense in seemingly hopeless cases His domineering wife Hilda is she who must be obeyed Amidst a cast of thoroughly uirky thoroughly English characters Rumpole proceeds in his goal of protecting the notion of innocent until proven guilty and upholding the importance of the jury Rumpole s aka Mortimer s use of language is fabulous calling the court the palais de justice describing himself in the third person at just the right time This volume sees Rumpole sorting out a group of actors defending a schoolteacher accused of leading on a student and fighting his family as they try and get him to retire

    The stories are excellent but sadly the narrator rather spoils it by making Rumpole sound like a cross between Mr Bean and Donald Duck Robert Hardy who read Volume 1 did a FAR better job of it and I wish he'd done this one aswell I don't understand why the reader has given the main character such a bizarre voice when other minor characters he reads perfectly clearly It makes the recording sound distorted and hard to fol

    Bought this for elderly relative Description of Mp3 compatible player could be highlighted better as being new to talking books assumed you just played it on a CD player Plays fine on DVD player but this is fiddly form someone in their senior years Not purchased talking books before so beware of this fact if you are considering this purchaseExpensive gift if you do not have ability to hear it could make this fact clearer to newbies like
