review Shunned Kings of Miskatonic Prep #1

Se no one wanted One year of taunts and insults and bullying Then I’m free But I didn’t count on Trey Ayaz and uinn Arrogant privileged dangerous Drop dead fucking gorgeous They want me gone They want me to suffer They’re determined to make my nightmares real Tough luck bully boys – I won’t hide away I’m not afraid But. As I said in my pre review the idea of cultists and what not piued my interest when I first heard about this title Boarding schools meeting the occult is a fun concept so merging it with reverse harem bully romance seemed like it could be something really engaging since the two concepts overlap with one another nicelyHowever this book doesn t uite live up to the grandeur of its ideas and in fact has content that struck me as unnecessarily problematic because it was just tossed in for no good reason when so many other things could have adeuately replaced it without stepping on toesI did get through it pretty easily and was engaged enough to want to go into the next book so I wouldn t say it s a terrible story or anything I do see potential for it expanding into something but we have to talk about everything else firstSo let s unpackThe biggest content issue I had is that Hazel is a white girl with some poorly kempt dreads and the book is strangely fixated on making her dreadlocks a thing Hazel constantly mentions them and seems to be bizarrely attached to them They re something she is also bullied over constantly and it s done in a way that feels like at best ignorant appropriation and at worst the author trying really hard to push forth a whitewashed understanding of why dreadlocks a black hairstyle are seen so negatively This is kind of long so I put all my reasoning for why Hazel shouldn t have dreadlocks and it shouldn t have been such a point of focus underneath a spoiler cut to cut down on how much space is eaten up in my reviewview spoilerSo to break it down1 Hazel appropriates a hairstyle that s very heavily not something for white people which in itself could be a long list of reasons2 The author misses the point that people view dreadlocks negatively because it s a black hairstyle and instead pushes the idea that people dislike dreadlocks because they think they re dirty People presume they re dirty becauseA It s a black hairstyle and people are racistB White people and black people have different hair and therefore hair care needs black people don t have the slick oily texture of white hair so white people have applied a misunderstanding that black hair care is inherently dirty for not being constantly shampooed like white hair isC By calling a style worn almost exclusively by black people dirty it acts as a way to insult them and acts as justification for why people are racist See They re filthy people who don t wash their hair This is why I don t like them and treat them the way I do It s that kind of mentality and it gets applied to a lot of things about a lot of races it s one of the most basic staples of racism3 The author goes as far as to use the old well I have a black friend so it s fine excuse that every white person unwilling to change their behavior to take a step towards change uses when someone calls them out for something they saydo Your singular black friend seeming chill with you wearing dreads or saying the N word isn t proof that you re not racist that what you re doing isn t racist Hazel having a black best friend who has an older sister who put the dreads in her hair isn t the authority on saying it s okay4 The author then has Hazel get bullied a lot for her dreads as a white girl which is taking the plight of a minority and stripping it from them and making it just another adversity a white teen girl gets to go through when there are literally so many plights a white girl could go through that haven t been wrenched from a minority and rewritten so as to not talk about racism5 The author also seems to also try to justify it because Hazel grew up in a slum and is ghetto so she can have dreadlocks as proof of where she came from which the implication that being ghetto and black are synonymous which is what is being implied if Hazel s dreadlocks a black style are seen as rightfully ghetto in nature is actually super racist because being ghetto has really negative associations like low standard of living lacking ethicsmanners and being involved in criminal activity 6 The white bitches who get dreads aren t trying to be ghetto That isn t at all a correct statement They re always weird white hippies with weird variations in their politics Kind of like the author very pro gay but weirdly ignorant of racial issues 6 Besides the whole white people have just been shit to black people so it s real shitty to appropriate a hairstyle they ve historically been abused for having dilemma uh white people have WAY different texture to their hair so they really shouldn t have dreadlocks They re literally just nasty mats of knotted gnarly hair It s why no white person has neat looking dreads but you can see black people with super immaculate looking dreads If white people were supposed to have dreads it would be a style we ve historically worn and outside of some accounts of Celts wearing faerie locks which is literally just your hair gets so matted from you not combing it that it s like a faerie did it to you it s not an actual hairstyle they did and maybe some European barbarian tribes having dreadlocks again from not combing it and just being gross as is a customary of Europeans than anyone white people only wanted dreadlocks after they started seeing things black people had as trendycoolexotic and wanted to steal them for their own I should have kept my mouth shut I should have let them win Now the kings of the school are out for my blood and they’re not the only ones The fire took everything My parents My best friend My life Now I have a second chance I only have to endure one year at this prestigious academy for rich snobs One year of being the charity ca. DNF at 22% I m extremely disappointed to be saying this because I find Holmes s Never Bookshop series to be one of the most original and well written RH series out there I was a little wary when I saw her jumping on the bullyacademy bandwagon it feels like every RH author and their cat is on that bandwagon these days but I began reading eagerly anywayI can t believe this is even the same author who wrote my beloved Never series The heroes weren t sexy in the slightest yet the heroine still kept moaning to herself about how hot they were You want to know how unsexy they are The first thing one of them says to her is that he loves all kinds of pussy from tight to loose He tells her he s the resident man whore He was trying so hard to be alluring but he looked like a crude pathetic wannabe One of the heroes is Turkish HIS VOICE MAKES THE HEROINE THINK OF SHISHA AND TURKISH DELIGHT AND STEREOTYPICAL MIDDLE EASTERN STUFF LIKE THAT From a voice We get it okay he s Turkish Maybe I should be asking my friends if my very voice makes them think of Southeast Asia Ridiculous The Gothic atmosphere Trying way too hard I ll stop there because that was as far as I got but I feel let down
