Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 1 (1)

S normal people in every wayexc. I picked up this title because my teenage daughter is a huge fan and I m always amused to see what makes the kids happy these days I m glad I did but I m not overwhelmingly impressed It was a worthwhile 35 minutes thoughThe nutshell view on this is that it s essentially along the lines of the typical vampirewerewolfundead genre novel Outsider to the group goes through a transformation and becomes an insider and now must adjust to a new life Again fairly standard stuffTo the positive the novel is fast paced and graphically stunning Despite being in black and white the action is extreme and evocative You can very uickly begin to feel for the characters and their plight within the story The pages race by at a frantic paceTo the negative I suspect this is coming in future novels but I don t uite see the moral themes of the story yet We have only the vaguest hints of the standard struggle between good and evil and the standard motif of is evil really as bad as we perceive it to be but I m sure that will come to light in the futureIn summary nothing terribly original as yet from an overarching narrative perspective but the series is young and may very well grow into itselfPS I was NOT provided a review copy by the publisher but I would certainly welcome the opportunity to review titles in this realm in the future
