Hari Nef’s journey as a model, actress, performer, and unabashed It girl has been nothing short of enthralling. Withgamine limbs and a unique beauty, Nef has built a name for herself as a modeling industry game-changer and outspoken activist for the rights of trans people in and out of fashion. Her latest role—a spot on Amazon’s groundbreaking series Transparent—raises her profile. Though her part in the comedy remains under wraps, series creator Jill Soloway revealed Nef’s presence in the show’s second season on Instagram. Joining a cast that includes Emmy winner Jeffrey Tambor, Gaby Hoffmann, and Jay Duplass would be a coup for any model, but Nef’s addition to the cast serves to broaden the already open-minded series’ perspective.
As a trans woman appearing on a critically acclaimed series about gender identity, Nef joins actresses like Laverne Cox and Candis Cayne, who have both helped to change the way gender is perceived. Speaking to Style.com earlier this year, Nef was vocal about the need for increased visibility and true dialogue in spite of the fashion industry’s current trend toward the androgynous. “Trans aesthetics feel new. Not many have ‘gone there,’” she began. “This idea, of course, is ludicrous, as transfolks have been around forever, but I’m happy to see trans aesthetics take root within an industry that thrives on its power to define what or who is beautiful and aspirational.”
